Reversing and blind-spot incidents: the most preventable vehicle accidents

If you look into how people get seriously harmed or killed by vehicles at work, there's a common scenario: reversing vehicles and blind spots. In the UK, nearly a quarter of all deaths involving workplace vehicles happen while reversing. In Australia, vehicle incidents are the single biggest cause of worker deaths. In the US, regulators point to pedestrians being struck as the number one cause of forklift fatalities. And in New Zealand, WorkSafe is blunt about the fix: separating people from vehicles is the most effective control there is.


Reversing forklifts: a continuous problem


Reversing is, by definition, a manoeuvre where the driver can't see well. Blind spots are physical too. No amount of care removes the fact that a forklift mast, a trailer, or a load blocks the view. On top of that, these are routine jobs done hundreds of times a shift, so people get comfortable and stop treating them as dangerous.


And the controls that should protect people (marked walkways, one-way routes, exclusion zones, spotters) often exist on paper but slip in practice. (For example, there's a marked walkway, but nobody uses it.) That gap between the plan and what actually happens on the floor is where most of these incidents live.


What actually prevents them


The fixes are well understood, and every regulator says roughly the same thing. Separate people and vehicles wherever you can, with defined routes, walkways and barriers, so they rarely share space. Design out reversing where possible, with one-way systems and drive-through loading. Put exclusion zones around moving plant. And where people and vehicles do have to meet, at gates, crossings and loading docks, control it tightly with clear rules, good visibility, and reversing aids like mirrors, cameras and trained spotters.

Aren't reversing cameras and alarms already enough?

They help, but they rely on the driver noticing in the moment, and they do nothing about a walkway that isn't used or a one-way system that gets ignored when people are busy. Separation and designing out reversing come first. inviol adds the bit that's usually missing: showing you whether those controls are actually working, and catching the interactions that still slip through.


Do we need to install new cameras?

Usually, not at all. inviol runs on your existing CCTV, with a small hardware unit on-site that's included in your agreement rather than bought separately. Some plants add a few cameras to cover a specific dock or blind corner, but the starting point is what you already have.


What about blind spots our fixed cameras can't see?

It works on what your cameras see. A blind spot inside the cab or out of camera view is not visible.


Isn't this just catching drivers out?

No. inviol is a coaching tool, not a monitoring stick.
