Implementation timelines: how long does AI safety monitoring take to deploy?

One of the most common questions I hear from operations and EHS managers evaluating computer vision AI for safety is: "How long is this going to take?"


It's a fair question. Most people's experience with enterprise technology deployments involves months of scoping, lengthy integration projects, infrastructure upgrades, and a go-live date that keeps moving to the right. When you've been through that cycle a few times, scepticism about timeline promises is healthy.


So here's the honest answer: for platforms that work with existing CCTV infrastructure and process data on-premise, the deployment timeline is measured in days to weeks, not months. Most inviol customers are fully live and detecting safety events within approximately two weeks of signing. That's not a marketing claim. It's what we see consistently across hundreds of customer sites.


Here's why it's faster than you expect, what the timeline actually looks like week by week, and what factors can speed it up or slow it down.




Why it's faster than you think


The speed of deployment comes down to architecture. Traditional enterprise software deployments are slow because they typically require custom integration with existing systems, migration of data from one platform to another, configuration of complex workflows, and sometimes infrastructure upgrades to support the new software.


Computer vision AI for safety sidesteps most of this. The platform connects to cameras you already have, on a network you already run, using a processing unit that arrives on-site ready to go. There's no data migration (you're generating new data, not moving old data). There's no complex integration required for the core deployment (though integrations with EHS platforms can be added later). The week-by-week timeline


Every deployment is slightly different depending on the size of the facility, the number of cameras being connected, and the organisation's internal processes. But here's what a typical inviol deployment looks like.


Before week 1: scoping and preparation. This usually takes a few days. Our team works with yours to understand the facility layout, review your existing camera infrastructure, identify the highest-risk zones you want to monitor first, and confirm network compatibility. For most sites, this is a couple of calls and a site plan. If your cameras are modern IP cameras on a wired network (which covers the vast majority of installations from the last decade), you're almost certainly ready to go. You don't need to connect every camera, just the ones covering your priority areas.


Week 1: hardware setup and calibration. The inviol processing unit arrives at your site. Your IT team connects it to the network, and our team configures the camera feeds remotely. The system begins calibrating to your specific environment: learning the camera views, understanding what normal activity looks like, and beginning to detect and classify safety events. During calibration, you'll confirm that camera feeds are correct and that detection zones are properly defined. This is a collaborative process, but the heavy lifting is on our side.


Week 2: system live and initial data. By the end of the second week, the platform is typically live and detecting events across your connected cameras. Your reporting dashboard starts populating with real data from your facility. This is the point where your safety team can log in, review events, and start seeing the heatmap take shape. Most safety managers describe this as the moment the platform becomes real, because you're seeing events from your own facility, not a demo environment.


Week 2-3: team onboarding. While the system is generating data, your team gets trained on the platform. The dashboard is designed to be intuitive (one operations manager described it as similar in ease of use to familiar consumer apps), and daily event review typically takes around 5-10 minutes. We also walk your team through the coaching platform, showing how detected events become short, face-blurred video clips that supervisors can use in toolbox talks and shift briefings.


Week 3-4: coaching begins. By the third or fourth week, your supervisors should be running their first coaching conversations using real clips from your facility. The heatmap is showing patterns (which zones have the highest event density, what time of day risk peaks), and your safety team has a quantified baseline to measure improvement against.


Ongoing: optimisation and expansion. After the initial deployment, there's a period of refinement. Detection zones get adjusted, coaching rhythms get established, and the platform gets tuned to your specific environment. For multi-site organisations, the playbook from site one becomes the template for subsequent sites, and each additional deployment is typically faster than the first.

What affects the timeline


Some deployments are faster than the timeline above. Some are slightly slower. Here are the factors that make the biggest difference.


Camera infrastructure. If your cameras are modern IP cameras on a wired network, deployment is straightforward. If you have older analogue cameras, you may need encoders or a hybrid DVR to digitise the feeds, which adds a step. If cameras need repositioning for better coverage of high-risk zones, that takes a bit longer. But in most cases, existing cameras are more than sufficient.


Network readiness. The processing unit needs network connectivity to receive camera feeds and transmit event data to the dashboard. If your facility has a well-maintained network with available bandwidth, this is a non-issue. If your network needs attention (limited bandwidth in certain areas, firewall configuration, VLAN setup), your IT team will need to address this before or during the first week. Internal approval processes. Technology deployments at large organisations often involve sign-offs from IT, security, legal, privacy, and operations. Platforms with SOC 2, ISO 27001, and GDPR compliance and a clear privacy architecture (on-premise processing, face blurring, no raw video leaving the site) tend to move through these approvals faster because the common concerns are addressed by design. But if your organisation has a lengthy procurement or IT security review process, that will add time before the technical deployment begins.


Change management. The technology installs quickly. The cultural adoption takes a bit longer. Communicating with your workforce about what the system does (and doesn't do), briefing unions or worker representatives, and establishing the coaching rhythm are all important steps that happen in parallel with the technical setup. Organisations that invest in transparent communication before go-live consistently see faster adoption and less resistance.

The per-site timeline stays similar, but coordinating across multiple facilities adds project management complexity. Most organisations start with a single site or a defined pilot area and expand once the value is proven.

How this compares to other safety technology


For context, here's how computer vision AI deployment timelines compare to other safety technology investments.


Traditional EHS software platforms (incident management, compliance tracking, audit tools) typically take 3-6 months for enterprise deployments, involving extensive configuration, data migration, and workflow customisation. IoT sensor networks (wearables, proximity sensors, environmental monitors) require physical hardware installation at every monitoring point, which can take weeks to months depending on facility size and the number of sensors. Full CCTV system replacements (if new cameras were needed) would involve physical installation, cabling, network infrastructure, and commissioning, typically a multi-month project.


Computer vision AI that overlays onto existing cameras bypasses the infrastructure investment entirely. The cameras are already there. The network is already there. The processing unit is the only new hardware, and it's a single device per site.




The pilot question


Many organisations (sensibly) want to start with a pilot before committing to a full deployment. A well-structured pilot typically covers a defined area of your facility, runs for 60-90 days, and has clear success metrics agreed upon before it starts: detection accuracy, false positive rates, coaching session completion, and early indicators of risk reduction.


The deployment timeline for a pilot is the same as for a full deployment (the technology setup doesn't change based on the scope of the commitment). The difference is in the evaluation period and the decision point. A pilot gives your team time to validate the technology in your environment, build confidence in the data, and develop the internal business case for expansion.


If you're considering a pilot, the most important thing is to define what success looks like before you start. "We'll try it and see" is not a success criterion. "We'll measure detection accuracy above 90%, achieve a 20% reduction in event density in the pilot zone within 60 days, and complete coaching sessions using the platform at least twice per week" is a success criterion.




Getting started


The gap between "we're interested" and "we're live" is shorter than most people expect. For a standard single-site deployment, the typical path is: scoping call (1-2 days), hardware shipped and received (dependent on location), technical setup and calibration (3-5 days), system live and team onboarding (end of week 2), and coaching conversations underway (week 3-4).
