Bapcor isn't just a leading provider of vehicle parts, accessories, equipment, service, and solutions. They're a team that's dedicated to best-in-class safety practices. Implementing inviol, an AI-powered safety software, was a critical part of elevating their already great system into a world-class safety structure.

A leading Australian and New Zealand-based automotive aftermarket company, Bapcor operates a large network of retail, trade and specialist businesses. They run a staggering range of sites and stores in over 900 locations and distribution centres across Australia and New Zealand.

Safety is critical at Bapcor. Their team members are priority number one, and keeping everyone safe is fundamental to what they do. Bapcor's dedicated leadership team recognises that a proactive, prevention-focused approach is essential to keeping their people safe.

"inviol has proven to be an invaluable addition to our safety culture. It has helped us build a strong sense of safety awareness within the team, as well as giving us the ability to focus on our highest priorities first. From a leadership perspective, inviol gives our managers and leaders the ability to engage with their teams consistently with relatable content. We've seen our teams respond well, developing better safety habits and awareness on the floor." – Jon Adams, Executive General Manager Supply Chain, Bapcor

Continuous improvement in safety culture

Before implementing inviol, Bapcor had established safety practices, and for good reason. Mobile plant risks in the automotive industry pose major hazards, including collisions, crushing, and rollovers of forklifts, tuggers and automated guided vehicles. These safety events can have consequences that can range from minor injuries to loss of limb or loss of life.

"Our safety culture has continued to grow from strength-to-strength over recent years. Mobile plant risk is a known and managed critical risk within our business, and the controls are supported by strong governance and clear internal controls." – Jaye Hazelwood, HSW Business Partner, Bapcor

Having a well-established safety culture helped Bapcor lay the foundation to bring in new technology and elevate their safety practices to best-in-class.

Implementing inviol

While the team at Bapcor had plenty of AI safety solutions to pick from, it was inviol's focus on mobile plant risk, its ability to deliver objective, real-time data and its emphasis on proactive risk identification that made it the best fit for Bapcor's distribution network.

"The platform also complemented our existing safety culture and controls, enabling us to enhance what we already to well." – Jim Karamanolakis, IT Infrastructure and Networking Manager, Bapcor

inviol seamlessly embedded into Bapcor's existing toolbox talks and safety workflows. With a core focus on delivering safety coaching, inviol helped the Bapcor team further build their existing positive safety culture.

Implementing inviol across Bapcor's distribution network went "very smoothly" starting with a successful pilot where the team embraced the changes.

"inviol has been a significant advancement for Bapcor Mawson Lakes. It highlighted areas of safety complacency, which were addressed promptly, and has enabled a more proactive and structured approach to identifying and managing potential risk 'hot spots', thereby reducing future exposure. At a leadership level, inviol has provent to be one of the most effective tools available to support and sustain the safety of our teams." – Steve Pratt, Distribution Centre Manager South Australia, Bapcor

"One of the few challenges we encountered was when we implemented inviol with the setting to spot all risk levels at once, before our team had the opportunity to fully understand how to get the most value from the platform."

This was quickly addressed by inviol's dynamic risk functionality, which allowed the team to refine their focus to key high-risk events, lowering the volume of 'alert noise' and giving the team at Bapcor the ability to focus on potentially higher risk areas and interactions first.

The decision to move from a two-site pilot to a full rollout was driven by the strong partnership Bapcor developed with the team at inviol and their eagerness to support Bapcor's vision for world-class safety.

From best practice to world-class safety

With one simple, consolidated dashboard, inviol has supported the management of safety at multiple sites by improving visibility and consistency.

During the two-site pilot program, Bapcor achieved a 30% reduction in potentially at-risk behaviours. They were also able to implement minor layout adjustments to further support their traffic management plans. The team observed managers having more meaningful safety conversations with their teams, and overall increased awareness of pedestrian and mobile plant interactions.

inviol's platform also shows that Bapcor has achieved a 50.4% reduction in risk for pedestrian-plant and plant-plant interactions at their pilot sites.

By leveraging new technology such as inviol, Bapcor has developed the ability to proactively identify high-risk behaviours and environments, gain real-time insights, and intervene before incidents occur.

The introduction of inviol had a positive impact on our leadership approach to safety, strengthening on-floor presence, decision-making, and leading by example. The platform provides real-time visibility and meaningful insights, enabling leaders to engage teams more effectively and focus on prevention rather than retrospective reporting. This has improved how safety is monitored, discussed, and managed across the site, with a clear emphasis on awareness, consistent behaviours, and continuous improvement through targeted leadership conversations." – Mollie Gawley, Distribution Centre Manager Western Australia, Bapcor
